Academy Awards: Oscars 2011 Time, Categories, and More

The 83rd annual Academy Awards is slated to take place at the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles and set to be broadcast live on ABC at 5 p.m. PST/8 p.m. EST on Sunday, Feb. 27.

Honoring movies released in 2010, “Hollywood’s biggest night” will introduce the winners in the 24 Oscar categories, with one of the youngest pairs to host the ceremony—the 28-year-old The Princess Diaries actress Anne Hathaway and the 32-year-old Spider-Man actor James Franco.

This year’s Academy Awards mark merely the third time the ceremony has been co-hosted by a man and a woman. Bob Hope and Thelma Ritter hosted in 1953, and Jerry Lewis and Celeste Holm paired up in 1957, according to USA Today.

The actors and actresses will start arriving on the red carpet at 7 p.m. EST, an hour before the show.

The official after-party, the 53rd annual Governors Ball, will be held adjacent to the Kodak Theatre immediately after the ceremony. To serve the ball’s 1,500 guests, the academy chose master chef Wolfgang Puck to create the menu for the 17th consecutive year.

“Our goal each year is to honor Hollywood’s brightest stars and most accomplished artists with a culinary masterpiece,” Puck said in a press release. “Only the finest ingredients and flavors will do.”

The Academy Awards, also known as the Oscars, is considered the most prestigious awards of the American movie industry. Presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the Oscars' counterparts—the Grammy Awards for music, Emmy Awards for television, and Tony Awards for theater—are modeled after the Oscars.

The first Academy Awards ceremony was held out of the public eye at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel on May 16, 1929.

The Oscar presentation will be televised live in more than 200 countries.
