Jim Gray will be removed from Golf Channel’s broadcast team following an incident during yesterday’s coverage of the Northern Trust Open, according to the network.
According to the AP, Gray got into an altercation with Dustin Johnson‘s caddie, Bobby Brown, who owned up to nearly causing his man to be disqualified for missing his 7:32am PT tee time. Gray questioned Johnson during live play about the incident, then reported his comments on the air. The playing partners with Johnson were upset about the interruption which broke protocol for when players can be interviewed.
After Gray reported on the incident on Golf Channel’s air, an altercation developed between Gray and the caddie.
Gray is a freelancer with the network and is used at will. His status for future work with the network is uncertain.
“Our focus is to provide the best possible golf coverage for our viewers. Anything else is a disservice. In order to avoid further distraction, we’ve decided to remove Jim from this particular assignment,” said Golf Channel spokesman Dan Higgins in a statement.
This is his second altercation in less than a year. Last summer, Gray and then Ryder Cup captain Corey Pavin (as well as his wife, Lisa) got into a heated verbal altercation when Pavin denied that he told Gray that Tiger Woods would make his squad for Celtic Manor one way or another.
