Jim Leyland says Miguel Cabrera is in excellent physical condition.CAPTIONBy David J. Phillip, APJim Leyland not only is standing by Miguel Cabrera after his arrest for DUI, but the Tigers manager adds that he expects great things from his first basemen this season.
Said Leyland to reporters this morning (via the Detroit Free Press):
"I know for a fact, without getting into this situation, I know for a fact Miguel Cabrera is in the best shape of his life. He's stronger than he's ever been, and he's quicker than he's ever been . . . I think Miguel Cabrera is probably going to have the biggest year of his life."
Leyland also promised that Tigers players would welcome Cabrera back into the clubhouse and that team chemistry wouldn't be hampered by the oft-troubled player's latest off-the-field incident:
"It's not going to affect the team at all . . . All these people that are getting dramatic about this . . . and all this negative impact. It's not going to affect this team one bit. Trust me. That's all reading material, everybody getting all upset and getting real dramatic."
Cabrera's arrival date for spring training hasn't been disclosed yet.
